Overview of the Recent Developments of Burma-China Relations

Abstract:
The year 2010 marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Burma (Myanmar) and China. While Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao was attending ceremonies to mark the anniversary, US Senator Jim Webb issued an announcement to cancel his Burma trip in light of Burma's nuclear programme. While Burma is seen to have developed a closer relationship with Beijing, the 2009 Kokang incident could be seen as evidence to support the view that Bejing's influence over Rangoon is overstated. The Kokang incident together with issues surrounding Border Guard Forces highlight the uncertainties in the Beijing-Rangoon relationship, and these uncertainties could lead to sudden changes in both countries' foreign policies towards each other.
About the speaker:
Tharaphi Than was born and bred in Rangoon. She went to Grinnell, Iowa for her BA studies, and then to SOAS, London for an MA and PhD in History. Her research interests include the political, social and cultural history of modern and contemporary Burma and diaspora communities in colonial and contemporary Southeast Asia, and she is currently involved in two groups of overseas Chinese communities in Burma.
